The usual basis is the weight of your shipment plus the distance it travels, with additional charges for things like a long carry, stairs, or shuttle access where a full-size truck cannot reach the door. An in-home or video survey is what makes the weight estimate accurate.
Interstate shipments are quoted a range of possible delivery dates rather than a single arrival time, because the truck is routed against distance, other shipments and conditions on the road. The window is agreed before the shipment leaves.
A binding estimate sets the price for the inventory that was surveyed, so adding items later changes it. A non-binding estimate is a projection and the final charge follows the actual weight. Both are legitimate, and it is worth confirming which one you have.
Passports, medication, valuables, laptops and anything you need in the first day or two are usually better carried personally, because they cannot be retrieved from a truck mid-route.
